Midnight's Choice- The Switchers Trilogy- Kate Thompson
The second book is more dark than the others and, although still good, it was my least favorite of the three. It started out with Tess getting a pet rat because she was lonely (rats were the only animals, besides humans, with a language) and wanted company but when the full-grown rat only managed to speak the rat equivalent of 'baby talk' Tess feels lonely all over again. She finds out kevin survived the fire (thats how he 'died' in the last book) by taking the form of a Phoenix (mythical creature made of fire, or something like that) and surviving the fire. Tess also finds another switcher, a more sinister kind though. Kevin is captured by the zoo and the only one to help tess get him is with Martin. But Martin is hard to convince and if Tess wants his help she has to become a vampire for a night. What she doesn't know is that once your a vampire the sinister personality becomes a part of you but she took too long deciding and he bit her. Now she is hoping that he will not choose a vampire for his final decision on his fifteenth birthday or else she and all of the other people he has feasted on will become a vampire and belong to him once they die. The chances are looking slim because he has already dug up a coffin... For himself and for her, because the offer of her joining him still stands strong.
