When I was a Soldier by Valerie Zenatti

Think that army life is simple? Think it's about dressing up, looking macho and smart while carrying toy guns? Think that it's only boys who have to join? Think again.
Valerie is eighteen and like all the other girls and boys of her age in Israel, two years of army training is compulsory. It's a whole new section of her life where she must be prepared to leave old friends behind, meet new ones and embrace an alien lifestyle. This novel which is inspired by the time when she was in the Israel Army recounts her experiences of the harsh training, living conditions, lessons which involved memorising every single detail on whole maps overnight, rigid timetables, strictly ltimed holidays, often disgusting food etc. etc. It clearly describes a life where freedom is limited and where on-going conflict with nearby countries rages.
