The second entry in the series. Unlike the first one, this would not disappoint you by the irrelevant long plot.
Thanet has a serious family issue: when his son Ben is old enough to go to school, his wife Joan would get a new job and this would change his life but for the best or the worst? But that's not all, when another murder happens in Nettleton. The victim is Carrie Birch, a mysterious and a victim of claustrophobia by none other than her mother, Mrs Birch. As Thanet investigates further, he comes across thousand-pound packets in Carrie's room. He even digs out the dark secret behind her murder: Carrie Birch is not a normal woman, she is a snooper. And what she was snooping for is the thing that led her to a tragic end.
Again, Simpson has impressed me with vivid details of the atmosphere and the scene of the crime, so detailed that you can easily picture it in your mind. With every words, Simpson builds up tension for the readers with carefully characterization of each characters and the detailed atmosphere, creating an ominous feeling and suspense for readers. Each character is very alive and unique with interesting conversations. I love how Inspector Thanet works: basing on emotions and psychological things, he can corner the suspects and make them spit out the real truth. A classic whodunit type.
